Cosmetics Virgin: Why should I learn how to put on makeup?

    Dear adults:

I'm going to be a senior in high school, and I've seen my cool friends wear make up almost everyday since we were freshmen. Although my wardrobe "progressed" over the years (Serious, I used to wear men's clothes), I never smeared myself with any of that make up stuff with the exception of lip stick for choir concerts. Here are the reasons I've been holding out:

    1. I use friends' skills for free: I never bothered to learn it. Every time I go to a show or a dance, I ask my friends to put on make up for me. I would just give them a make up kit to use, close my eyes/do whatever they tell me to, and thank them immensely and get on with it. Actually, everytime, I would run around like an immature child and laugh, "Gah! Don't look at me! There's something on my face!" Then I'd get on with it.

    2. It feels awkward: Afterward, I'm eager to wash it all off after an event, because I feel insecure and not myself when wearing it. I'm afraid my lip stick will smear, my eyeliner will run, my mascara will be messy, etc. I overall, can't look in the mirror with make up on without a feeling of weird, like "o_O."

    3. The whole idea of make up: I always believed that my face is my face, if it's not good enough then whatever. Putting on makeup sounds like painting my face like a mask and that my real face is too plain or not good enough ("accentuate this!" "bring out the color of this!")

I've got the grades, nerdy hobbies, and volunteer work that boosted my confidence in high school. But what about after high school? If I just want to look decent in college and in the workplace, should I care beauty standards as an adult? How does society in general view women who wear zero make up? Why do women wear make up in the first place?

You don't have to wear it every day. I'm currently a college student and there's very, very rarely a need to wear it--thank God because I'm not a big fan of it and love having a fresh and makeup-less face. However, you should learn how to put on makeup because there will be times like job interviews and formal occasions that come up and call for a least some makeup. Though many women know how to and you won't have much trouble finding another female to help you, it's really a skill you should learn to do on your own some time.

There's a few reasons you should learn to apply makeup:

    1. In certain situations, makeup helps pull together your look and thus make you look professional. It can even out your skin tone, make you look more awake, etc.

    2. If you don't wear it every day, it'll make you look prettier on the times you do wear it.

    3. It's a boost of confidence on days you feel just blah about the world.

    4. It accentuates your beauty. Got stunning, big eyes? Makeup will make them look even better. Are your lips even better than Scarlett Johanssens? A bright color will focus attention  on their aweasomeness. Etc

    5. It's FUN. Even if you don't wear it out in public, it's fun to buy crazy color eye shadows and see how much you can imitate Cirque du Soleil's makeup. It's like face painting for kids, but with much better "paints".

I agree with the above comment - you don't need to wear it every day unless you eventuallt particularly you want to, but it definitely is worth learning how to apply it properly for certain occasionas and investing in some decent products (obviously not spending loads). I'm not claiming to be an expert but I've got to be reasonably good at it through a) practice and b) beauty blogs. Just reading reviews, posts on products/brushes/etc or seeing how other people do their daily make up has helped me develop my own routine. It's great that you're comfortable without it though :)

if you don't like it , then don't wear it . simple as that . But if you do occasionally put on makeup then why not learn how to do some yourself? Rather be able to do it yourself then always depend on people.

Biggest reason to learn?  For yourself.

Add it to your list of "I'm fabulous, I can do this" things.

Oh, & for that one (sometimes last-minute) time you won't have that makeup maven friend around to help.

Besides...if it's for a date...it seems frowned upon to ask the girl at the table next to you, if she can help you wing that eyeliner.

Look, don't think of make up as face paint, think of it like an enhancer. Because if you know how to use make up properly, trust me it won't feel weird. You just have to enhance what you already have naturally beautiful.

I'm not really a big fan of makeup either.  I have always had bad acne, and makeup just made it worse.  Now that I've found a foundation that CURES zits, I wear it a bit more often.  Such as church or special occassions.  And I feel the same way.  My face is my face, and people should except me for who I am.

Society has been conditioned to think that everyone is OMG HIDEOUS without somehow painting their face or being rail thin etc.

I think most women wear makeup to either satisfy society or impress others.  Then there are those who wear it because they like to and want to look beautiful for themselves.  It just depends on the person.
